Ai in smartphones used to mean “call a cloud API.” That's changing fast — on-device AI silicon is now powerful enough to run respectable models locally, which changes the privacy, latency, and offline picture entirely.
What's on the device today
- Computational photography — most of what makes phone cameras good.
- Voice assistant wake-word and basic intent.
- Real-time noise suppression and transcription.
- Predictive battery, thermals, and network routing.
- On-device translation in increasing language pairs.
